How to remove Farmer Paint

How to remove Farmer paint, preserve o.g. paint? Stu aka S.Hanson #17 Posted March 8, 2017

Anyone have a trick for this? Getting spray paint off original paint , while not ruining original paint? Here's an example of what I'm dealing with: Stu aka S.Hanson #17 Posted March 8, 2017

Shoot. Nevermind. I did a search and found Looks like graffiti remover or jasco paint and epoxy remover and 3m abrasive pads. Barfly Posted March 8, 2017

Looks like there might not be a lot of original paint left around the lock? Stu aka S.Hanson #17 Posted March 9, 2017

The blue is the non og paint. It is speckled with rust pock marks but no big deal. Should turn out great Andrew ITA Posted March 9, 2017

I wouldn't use chemicals if you want to preserve the paint underneath. I think sanding it is your best bet, I'd start with 1000,checking frequently. Or coarser grit if you feel brave. It will be extremely slow but you won't inflict too much damage to the original paint, nothing you can't polish off. Doesn't look very thick,I guess it's basic over the counter spray can paint...What will you do for the rust? Stu aka S.Hanson #17 Posted March 9, 2017

I will do as you suggest, starting out slow. The spray paint is on the legsheild, front fender, left floorboard, toolbox door, bridge peice, frame arch. As for the rust on small parts I have a Tupper ware tub with rust remover I dip parts in. For the larger parts, Im just going to rub down with steel wool, and finish with acf 50. It's going to be a sleeper. Looks rough but clean, modern brakes and suspension with a reedvalved rapido. ScottWally Posted March 9, 2017

+1 for fine/superfine steel wool or one of those superfine 'sponge' sanding blocks. You can also use rubbing compound and a soft cloth. I've used some chemicals (acetone, Goof Off, carb cleaner, etc.) but elbow grease and very fine abrasives have had best results. We are lucky to be able to run original paint bikes in the arrid climate here, even with some bare metal. Good wax will keep the surface rust away for the most part. The overspray can do a great job of protecting the factory paint - it will be good to see yours after it's done. Stu aka S.Hanson #17 Posted March 10, 2017

Woohoo! 20 minutes or less to clean the toolbox door. Still have to polish up. Used Krud Cutter Graffiti Remover and a green scotch bright pad. Worked like a charm! As I start doing othere parts with thicker paint, I am using Goof Off Pro Strength Remover till the paint starts to lift, then I go back to Graffiti Remover. There's not much paint left to save. Good job on getting the old off though. Archived This topic is now archived and is closed to further replies. Go to topic listing Next unread topic
